“[R]adar was pretty powerful. German pilots engaged in bombing runs over Britain, many of which occurred at night, under cover of darkness. But these advances in radar technology allowed the British Royal Air Force (RAF) to shoot down a large number of German planes — more than German tacticians believed likely. So the Germans went looking for a cause, in hopes of neutralizing or replicating it. The British provided one: carrots. The RAF told newspapers that some pilots were better shots at night than during the day. As the story went, the thing that set them apart was that the night-flying aces ate extra carrots in an effort to improve their vision in the dark.”

One of the main purposes of setting development goals was to give donors a wish list and persuade them to put more resources into the items on the list. This may have helped in some areas but it is hard to argue that aid had much to do with halving poverty. Much of the fall [in poverty] occurred in China, which ignored the Millennium Development Goals. At best, aid and the MDGs were marginal.”

The same as I’ve been saying: aid rarely helps, certainly long term. Getting a country stable and investing in infrastructure to help it grow its economy is much better.

I assumed the UK would rank right up there in terms of tea consumption, but we’re not even in the top 10.

And we’re not even close to the top spot. Paraguay, the champ, consumes more than five times more tea per person than the UK.

Now I drink a fairly reasonable amount, so they must be drinking it non-stop to consume that much!

So This Is How It Begins: Guy Refuses to Stop Drone-Spying on Seattle Woman:

In the story this article relates the couple only realised there was a drone outside their window because of the noise it made, what if it had been silent (or close to it)?

I foresee an increase in sales of reflective coatings on windows or one-way glass to prevent flying spies (despite the privacy laws, are the police going to be able to stop them, are they going to bother?)
